We live in an exciting age as Western women, a time when we enjoy more economic and social freedom than our predecessors before us and when we are encouraged and enabled to make our contribution to history as never before.
We still have a long way to go and must continue to remember that the lives of our sisters in many poorer parts of the world have not progressed as ours have.
To me, though, the conversation still needs to be going deeper. Whilst continuing to make strides in breaking down the barriers that impede women’s continued material progress, I feel it is also important to take a broader view of what ‘the feminine’ means in today’s world. I like to think of it in terms of the qualities that both men and women are able to express and that are so crucial for the world to survive. Qualities of compassion, tolerance, gentleness, grace, warmth are as needed now as much as the qualities of strength, dominion, fidelity and courage. As women, what are we doing to empower the qualities of the feminine and masculine in both ourselves and those we collaborate with?
