I am the founder and director of Hua Dan, a China-based social enterprise that uses participation in theatre as a tool for personal and social transformation. Hua Dan has a particular focus on working with China’s rural- to- urban migrant workers, who work in the manufacturing and service industries, at the heart of China’s economic boom. I am also the founder of The Scheherazade Initiatives which seek to replicate the Hua Dan model into other emerging economies and providing leadership training services to corporations wishing to understand how to work ethically in global settings. Empowering leadership through arts, culture and creativity is central to my vision and as a ‘creative who consults’ I also work on several other projects that apply these creative and facilitation skills to solving problems other organisations are facing. Underlying the vision in my professional work, and driving through the choices I make in my personal life, is a commitment to overcoming fear in myself through a profound understanding and practice of love. By love, I do not mean romantic love, or love for an idea or project, but love as a power, as a life force, as the true expression of our divine identity. Love as surrender to a vision far bigger than ourselves. Love as the essence of who we really are.
My professional background has enabled me to gain insights and experiences on the impact of China’s rise to power, the effect of migration on both sending and receiving communities and, critically, the importance of developing leaders who can deal with the complexity and demands of our global world. With isolationism, xenophobia, nationalism and war posing a threat to the hard-won peace, stability and progress that has defined recent history, it has never been more important to make a stand for what truly needs to guide our leaders.
This blog, then, is a combination of articles, poetry, insights and other musings that allow me to share inspiration from my daily journey of learning to overcome fear through love, taking ‘quantum leaps’ in my own understanding, and the impact that has in working with others to enable personal and social transformation.
